Rapid Gender Analysis: Impact of COVID-19 on urban populations, ethnic minority groups and migrants in Thailand

Raks Thai Foundation conducted a rapid gender analysis focused on key populations in our existing program geographical areas. Covered populations include ethnic monitory groups, migrant workers (Myanmar and Cambodian), urban poor and urban workers. The study looked at gender-related vulnerabilities within these populations in relation to COVID-19, including their ability to engage in prevention activities, access medical services and respond to the socio-economic impact. Respondents included community members, representatives of nongovernment organisations, civil society groups and United Nations agencies.

This document has been developed for response actors working in humanitarian contexts who seek rapid approaches to gathering evidence about the experience of healthcare workers, and the communities of which they are a part. Understanding healthcare worker experience is critical to inform and guide humanitarian programming and effective strategies to promote IPC, identify psychosocial support needs. This evidence also informs humanitarian programming that interacts with HCWs and facilities such as nutrition, health reinforcement, communication, SGBV and gender.

Through concrete examples and links to tools, this brief is designed to support teams in generating and presenting robust, credible, and reliable social sciences evidence to inform public health responses in humanitarian contexts.

Rapid Gender Analysis (RGA): Gendered impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on migrants in Thailand ​

This Rapid Gender Analysis (RGA) utilises a qualitative methodology to identify the differing impact on male and female migrants from Myanmar and Cambodia living in Pattani and Samut Sakhon provinces of Thailand. It aims to give voice to migrants through primary data collection and seeks to provide migrants an opportunity to directly addresses their struggle during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Raks Thai conducted a gender power analysis (GPA) with the purpose of gaining a deeper understanding about gender barriers, including those surrounding GBV that may prevent key populations (e.g. men who have sex with men (MSM), transgender women (TG) and migrant workers (MW)) from accessing HIV/TB services.
